Tire Safety: Essential Checks Before a Long Trip

Planning a road trip? Your tires are the only contact between your car and the road. Make sure they're ready.

Pre-Trip Checklist

• Check tire pressure — Use a gauge when tires are cold. Follow the sticker on your door jamb.
• Inspect tread depth — Use the coin test: insert a coin in the tread groove. If you see the top of the coin, time to replace.
• Look for damage — Check for cuts, bulges, cracks, or embedded objects.
• Check the spare — Make sure your spare tire is properly inflated and the jack works.
• Wheel alignment — If your car pulls to one side, get an alignment before your trip.
